“When my mom and dad introduced us to family meetings, I quickly realized that this was more than just a sit down, update on each other’s lives. In just a handful of meetings, my relationships with each member of my family feel stronger, deeper, and more personal. Yes, I’ve learned more about the way my siblings and parents think, what struggles they otherwise would quietly endure, and what’s truly going on in their lives (and in their minds). Just as importantly, though, I’ve been given the chance to tell them how deeply I value them, their impacts on me, and reveal that even though it may seem like I’m navigating my young adulthood by myself, how often I think of each of them- yes, even my younger siblings- as moral and spiritual guides for how to live and how to grow. The thing about family meetings is there are no rules, only suggestions- frameworks- for how these meetings can go. Also, it’s not always easy to do this and be vulnerable, or simply find the words for what you’re thinking and feeling. The crucial part of the listeners is to provide that space of trust and genuine curiosity.”
“After our most recent family meeting, I said “Every family should do this!” Having a space to speak your mind about everything that you’ve been feeling is liberating. We think that we know the ins and outs of everybody in our family but we don’t. Sharing the thoughts that we’ve kept silent from the ones we love brings us closer together.”
If you've read my book Speaking to What Matters, you know how powerful honest conversations can be in helping you connect with yourself and the people you love.
Join me on Thursday, November 21st for an immersive online experience where I'll share tools and practices to deepen your connection to yourself and to the people you love.
There is no charge for this workshop.
I look forward to seeing you there!
