To Speak or Not to Speak
You want to appear more polished. Yes, you want to be articulate and amazing.
You want to stop using filler words. You may have stopped using ‘like' but that ‘um' keeps popping up for several of you.
You want to stop getting so nervous!
We all want to look good in front of others. It’s human. It’s natural. It’s real. And it’s okay.
I believe if you know what you're going to say, you can exude the confidence to capture any audience.
I also believe if you know who you are, you can learn how to interrupt the tendencies that trip us up when we open our mouths—or don’t!
We extroverts often discover what we want to say and the point we are making as we speak.
We introverts create the message in our mind, perfecting how it's going to come out of our mouth—and and often we stay silent for too long.
Are you extroverted or introverted? Do you recharge and get energy from being around others or recharge by getting energy from within?
Remember, it's how you draw energy every single day—not how outgoing you are. There are outgoing introverts!
Once you know the intro-extraversion about yourself, don’t beat yourself up for being one way or the other.
If you lean towards introversion: speak before you are ready. Just do it. This is where perfect is the enemy of good. Yes easier said than done, but you said you want to stop being so nervous! You will still be nervous but you will learn you are not taking space, and people want to hear what you have to say. You will be valued more.
If you lean towards extraversion: WAIT to speak until you have a point. Don’t think oohh let’s get the room looking at me and I know I will have something interesting come out of my mouth… eventually. Think: what is my key message? Start there, support your thoughts and then stop talking. You will be valued more.
You can connect more deeply with others on stage and off. It’s not about trying to become someone different, it’s about becoming the best of who you already are.
